Caribbean Review of Books
The International Curators Forum
Blue Curry’s work undermines fantasies of the native, the tropical and the exotic by disrupting the mythic components intrinsic to their narratives. His minimalist installations and assemblages float ambiguously between the ethnographic find, the souvenir and the contemporary art form. The formal and iconic elegance of his works is often at odds with the commonplace materials and unsophisticated techniques used to create them. The artist presents us with idiosyncratic objects of a surreal quality originating from a destination unknown to us, yet, seductively familiar.
The untitled work presented uses an industrial cement mixer custom coated in shimmering aquamarine to stir over 20 litres of sun cream. The fragrance of the sun cream immediately connects us with moments of leisure but when implied as a material of construction it questions what identities tourism dependent nations can ever build outside of the expectations of their visitors.”
